Varun Dhawan on father David, his hit-making average (it’s 75%, he says) and more, ahead of Father’s Day

When you’re a star kid in Bollywood, you’re always going to be measured by your parent’s career graph. While five-film-old Varun Dhawan has made his peace with that, he admits that he will never be able to match up to the person his father, David Dhawan is. He recently said that, given the chance, he’d like to star in a biopic that focused on his father’s rags-to-riches story. This Father’s Day, he tells us about the special bond they share.

Dad se dosti
He gushes, “My father has always been this very large-hearted, great guy. A total family man. I have seen him be an amazing brother, an amazing son, an amazing husband and of course the best father. When I started working with him during Main Tera Hero, he became more of a friend.”

Main tera anchor
He adds, “When I was younger, I’d never worry about him when he was much younger because he was always on the go and fit. As I grew older, I started worrying about his health. I think that’s what happens when children start growing up. You start becoming the anchor in your parents’ life. In my teen years, dad was the kindest, most chilled out father ever. My mom also wasn’t strict but she knew that she had to balance it out. She did that to ensure we don’t get spoilt. Now, I am strict with my father about his eating habits.”

No gifts for Pa
Will Varun gift his father anything? “Dad is a very strong, independent man and refuses to take anything from me. I can’t give him anything. It is very difficult to gift him something. I would love to gift him a car but knowing the person he is, he will make sure, he buys it himself. He is a self-made man and self-made men are like that. I try routing it through my mother but it hardly ever works.”

Papa, please preach!
He’s been fairly successful in terms of film choices, but admits he takes his father’s advice on films offered to him. “Of course, I take his advice. I would be a fool not to. If you have David Dhawan — one of the most successful directors in your house, why would you not? He has a 75 per cent success rate. Yeah, I would like to have the kind of success that my father has. Also, I don’t have a comic timing as good as him. I hope it only develops in the coming years. He is definitely better, even off screen. He has a way with people.” One thing he wishes to imbibe from his daddy dearest? “His punctuality. He will reach the sets before time. Even now. He hates being late. I want that for myself.”
