Five item songs to remember 2011 by

DNA picks item numbers that sizzled through 2011

It wasn’t a spectacular year for item numbers in Bollywood. None of the songs manage to set the screen on fire like Munni and Sheila did last year, but we saw a number of item boy debuts and some tunes stuck around just enough to make it to our Desi New Year’s Eve playlist.

I hate you (like I love You) from Delhi Belly

.

Aamir Khan went all retro to put a cherry on the cake that was the laugh riot of the year, Delhi Belly. In his retro wigs and shiny hipsters, Aamir reminded everyone of Big B’s Saara Zamaana from Yaarana. The song is an instant ear-worm and Anusha Dandekar and Aamir Khan manage to get you to ‘shake your biscuit’, which is what earns it a top spot!

Mit Jaye Ghum (Dum Maaro Dum) from Dum Maaro Dum

.

Anoushka Manchanda lent her voice to a trippy Deepika Padukone in what is a reprise of the RD Burman classic with a bold twist for Rohan Sippy’s action-thriller based in Goa. The song itself ruffled quite a few feathers and predictably, it worked wonders in creating hype. While nobody expects originality from music director Pritam, the shocking lyrics with the psychedelic music video made for a fabulous package. Ms Padukone may not be a patch on the original Dum Maaro Dum girl Zeenat Aman but she holds her own as a scantily clad belle spicing up a rave party.

Character Dheela from Ready

.

After Dabangg, Bhai returned alongside Asin in Ready. Zarine Khan, who has been in the news more for looking like Sallu’s ex-ladylove Katrina Kaif than for her debut in the dud Veer, joined the item girl league with Character Dheela. Bhai risked aping Shah Rukh Khan by aping stars of the yesteryears for the song (remember Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi?). Bhai’s attitude didn’t quite match the Dabanggness of Chulbul Pandey, but the song played across weddings, parties and processions.

Tai Tai Phiss from Chillar Party

.

Surrounded by kids, Ranbir Kapoor warns ‘Panga nai karna, danga nai karna, Kar dunga main warna, teri tai tai phiss.’ As he indulges in masti, the Rockstar becomes a tapori to groove to Amit Trivedi’s music. Kapoor sure knows how shake a leg with style! This one’s our favourite for being hatke!

Razia from Thank You

.

The film may have had many saying No Thank You, but the Hollywood-returned Mallika Sherawat sizzled as she gyrated to Razia in the Akshay Kumar starrer. Though the Hiss girl was far more enticing as Jalebi Bai in Double Dhamaal, her Razia was pretty fun to watch. One would wish that the video wouldn’t stray towards Bobby Deol’s funny hair-do or Akshay Kumar’s lazy dancing, but whatever little we see of Razia is fun enough!
