Mickey Mouse’s best friend and one of the most adorable animated cartoon characters Goofy celebrates his 80th birthday today.

The tall, funny, clumsy dog — who wears his trademark reddish-orange turtle neck; blue pants, an extra-long pair of brown shoes, white gloves, and a rumpled fedora version of a hat — made his first appearance in Mickey’s Revue in 1932. Originally named ‘Dippy Dawg’ — the character’s name was later changed to ‘George Geef’ or ‘G.G. Geef’. However, going by the Goof Troop television show and A Goofy Movie, his full name is Goofy Goof, and ‘Goofy’ just stemmed as a nickname version of the same.

Celebrating the birthday of one of the most loved characters, Disney Channel is showcasing special episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse starring Goofy between 8-9 am. A short-form programme, Have a Laugh will showcase classic, fun-filled Goofy moments for his fans all through the day. Also, as an additional treat for Goofy fans, the channel will premiere the hilarious Extremely Goofy Movie, which is filled with all the trademark antics of Goofy, at 6 pm.

A big Goofy fan, actor Karanvir Bohra says, “I want to gift Goofy a set of new clothes on his birthday and push him to hit the gym! Goofy was always this duffy kind of guy and I never even once thought of him as a dog really! As a kid I’d get very upset if he wouldn’t feature in Mickey Mouse cartoons.  I love Goofy and would want to give him a big hug!”

“Goofy always brings a smile to my face,” says TV actor Aishwarya Sakhuja. “His crazy laugh still evokes childhood memories when watching Goofy on TV was the only thing that mattered over the weekend. I remember throwing a fit once because I wanted Goofy stationary and my mother wouldn’t let me buy it. On his birthday, I want to give him a big hug to tell him how he made so many kids smile,” she adds.

Actor Vishal Malhotra states,”I  started my career by hosting for Disney. Goofy was like a part of my life. For me, Goofy exudes not only humour, but somehow a lot of warmth and care. He seems like the loyal friend I can depend on....well almost. Happy birthday Goofy, the term ‘to Goof up’, should be taken as a compliment.”
