TV star Mykel Hawke is a US Army Special Forces veteran and former Green Beret. He is back on the small screen wherein he plays host in show One Man Army on Discovery — a competition series, which sees the toughest of the tough go head-to-head in events that would sideline regular contestants in an instant. He also partners with his wife Ruth in the second series of the show Man, Woman, Wild (MWW). Here are some excerpts from an interview with Hawke:
You’re quite a traveller, any plans to visit India too?
Oh, I really want to see India. My wife’s been there so many times. She loves it and it is one of her favourite places to be in.
You have mastered several unique languages…
The first language I learnt was Russian — as a part of the military training thing. Next, I learnt Spanish. And slowly I discovered I could learn any language. So I went for Serbian and African next.
Any other language you’d want to learn?
I’m very fascinated by Arabic and Chinese. And, of course, Hindi. But I want to be in the place and with the people, to learn their language.
How is this season of MWW different from first?
This season, we try and teach people to make the best use of what’s available around, when stuck in a rough/wild situation.
You were familiar with the wilderness, but how did your wife react to the idea? Did you have to try too hard to convince her to be a part of it?
Oh no. Ruth had been travelling a lot as she used to host a travel show. So when this chance came up, she was super excited. But I must say the second season of MWW was so much more relaxed because our son was with us too. Of course he was staying in the main city and not travelling with us, but just the idea that he’s in the same city, was very relieving, unlike in the first season, which was so much more stressful.
