After her dream debut in the South Indian film, The Train opposite superstar Mammooty, model and actress Sheena Chohan is all set for Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s next venture, a series of 13 films based on the works of Rabindranath Tagore.
Having recently completed shooting for the two films that she bagged, Sheena is excited about the meaty roles she’s got in the internationally acclaimed director’s film. “Honestly, I’m blessed and honoured to be working with someone of such stature,” she says smiling.
Sheena met Buddhadeb Dasgupta in Mumbai, and he instantly signed her on for the two roles. “He thought that I fitted the role of the characters perfectly,” she says and adds,” When I asked him what he saw in me, he said it was the innocence in my eyes that reflected the personality of the character so well. I was surprised! “Sheena is a part of two films, Mukti and Patralekha.
“I don’t want to reveal too much about the characters but in Mukti, I play a soft and sensitive girl who is on a journey to find love and freedom, and also hopes to fulfill her dreams,” she says “whereas Patralekha is the story of a mysterious girl.”
Sheena ensured that she did her research before starting to shoot for the films. Having studied in Calcutta, she has grown up reading the works of Rabindranath Tagore. “I read a lot of Tagore to prepare for the roles. Although I’ve read them before, I felt that it broadened my horizon about his works, and helped me understand them better. I could connect to his poetry.”
Having worked in the South as well as in Bengal, Sheena has experienced two completely different styles of working. However, she agrees that both, Jayaraj and Buddhadeb Dasgupta expected a lot of ‘spontaneity’ out of her. “I’m a director’s actor. I work according to the director’s vision,” she says.
Sheena also comes from a theatre background. She says that it helped her portray her characters better. From the very beginning, Sheena was sure she wanted to pursue acting. “I’ve always been clear of what I wanted to do.”
Besides films, Sheena recently hosted the Bangladesh Premier League, which she believes has brought her greater exposure. Although she seems to be working with all the big leagues, and bagging all the right roles, Sheena is in no hurry, “I’m here to do good work and take things one step at a time,” she adds before signing off.
