Made in Rs 3 crore, this is India's biggest hit of 2024

This film has earned 45 times its budget, leaving behind biggies like Kalki 2898 AD, HanuMan, and Fighter to be India's biggest hit of 2024

The year 2024 has not been as productive for Indian cinema as the previous year was. The mega success of Bollywood films like Pathaan as well as south films working well last year had given the industry a much-needed boost. This year, the biggest films – across languages – have failed at the box office barring a few exceptions. But many smaller films have succeeded with a few earning several times their budgets. This has meant that the biggest hit of the year – in terms of profit earned – is a tiny Malayalam film with no stars but massive box office numbers.

India’s biggest hit film of 2024 is...

Premalu, a Malayalam romantic-comedy, is one of the highest-grossing Indian films of the year with a worldwide box office gross of Rs 136 crore. While the number may not seem that massive, it should be noted that the film had no stars, featured newcomers in the lead role, and was made on a shoestring budget of just Rs 3 crore. This gives the film a unique profit margin of 45 times its budget, making it 4500% profitable, the highest of the year among all Indian films, and one of the highest ever. Directed by Girish AD, Premalu stars Naslen K. Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju, alongside Sangeeth Prathap, Shyam Mohan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Akhila Bhargavan, Mathew Thomas and Althaf Salim. The film released in February to universal critical acclaim.

How Premalu beat biggies like Kalki 2898 AD, Fighter

The highest-grossing Indian film of the year has been Kalki 2898 AD, which has grossed over Rs 1000 crore. But given that it has a massive budget of Rs 600 crore, its profit stands at under 70% for now. Similarly, Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter (box office gross Rs 337 crore) has profit of around 35%. HanuMan is one of the other highly profitable films. The Telugu-language superhero film was made on a budget of Rs 40 crore and earned Rs 350 crore, giving it a strong 775% profit. Other Malayalam sleeper hits like Manjummel Boys and Aavesham have both been extremely profitable too.
