In the middle of the 20th century, major films had clear role demarcations. The hero was supposed to be a big star, as was the heroine. The villain was always a character actor derided by the audience and any talented actor would be cast for comic relief as the comedian. Naturally, comedians were seldom highly-paid and that too, only when they became big stars themselves (like Johnny Walker and Mehmood). But today, comedians chare big amounts for films and shows and India’s richest comedian is even wealthier than many top heroes.
India’s richest comedian is...
Telugu actor Brahmanandam is the richest comedian in India. As per several reports, the veteran actor is worth $60 million (over Rs 500 crore), making him much richer than some of the other top comedians in India, such as Kapil Sharma (Rs 300 crore), Johnny Lever (Rs 280 crore), and Paresh Rawal (Rs 80 crore). Brahmanandam is a comedian, voice artiste, and impersonator, who holds the Guinness World Record for having the most screen credits (over 1000). Having begun his career in 1985, the actor has extensively worked in Telugu fims with appearances in other languages as well. He is said to charge Rs 1-2 crore for a film even if it’s a cameo appearance. The actor was most recently seen in a small role with Prabhas in Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD.
How Brahmanandam dwarfs superstars’ earnings
Brahmanandam has built a net worth of Rs 500 crore, which is not just the highest among all comic actors in the country but even more than many top heroes and superstars. For instance, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth has a reported net worth of Rs 430 crore, much less than Brahmandandam. Even current stars like Ranbir Kapoor (reported net worth of Rs 340 crore) and Prabhas (Rs 300 crore) trail him.
