The Academy Awards, or popularly known as Oscars, are among the prestigious awards in world cinema as it not just recognised excellence in Hollywood, but also honours the best films from across the world through its category Best International Feature Film, which was known as Best Foreign Language Film till 2020.
Having their film sent to Oscars is a huge accomplishment in an actor's career and there have been various Indian actors such as Kamal Haasan and Aamir Khan whose multiple films have been selected as official entry to the Academy Awards. One artiste has acted in a total of eight films that have been sent to Oscars, the most by an Indian actor till date.
This record is held by Raghubir Yadav and the list of his films sent to Oscars include Salaam Bombay!, Rudaali, Bandit Queen, 1947 Earth, Lagaan, Water, Peepli Live, and Newton (in chronological order). Out of these, Salaam Bombay!, Lagaan, and Water were even selected among the final five nominees in the Best Foreign Film category. Also, Water was sent as Canada's official entry to Oscars, while the rest seven were all sent from India.
Kamal Haasan is the second person in this list with seven of his films being sent as India's official entry to the Academy Awards. These include Saagar, Swathi Muthyam, Nayakan, Thevar Magan, Kuruthipunal, Indian, and Hey Ram (in chronological order). Out of these, none of the films were able to grab a nomination among the final five films in the Best Foreign Language Film.
Apart from Salaam Bombay! and Lagaan, Mother India is the only Indian film which has been nominated for the Academy Award fr Best International Feature Film. Cinephiles feel RRR could have created a history by becoming the first Indian film to win an Oscar, if it would have been nominated instead of Last Film Show (Chhello Show) at the Academy Awards earlier this year.
