India's most successful filmmaker

This filmmaker has given 12 hits, no flops, which have collectively earned Rs 4300 crore at the box office

Success or failure at the box office for a film is not by any formula that can be predicted beforehand. If it was, no director or actor would ever give a flop. But almost all see some failure in their lives, even the greatest of the greatest. But there is one director in India who is yet to see box office failure. His films’ success has not only made him rich but also the number one highest-grossing director in Indian cinema history.

India’s most successful filmmaker is...

SS Rajamouli, the man who has given blockbusters like RRR and Baahubali, is the highest-grossing director in Indian cinema history. In a career that has spanned over two decades, the filmmaker has directed 12 films, all of which have been successful or profitable. Together, the dozen films have earned a staggering Rs 4300 crore at the box office. Granted that almost 80% of it has come from the box office earnings of his last three films – the two Baahubali features and RRR – but it remains an impressive feat nonetheless. Rajamouli will now look to increase this figure with his next, a thriller starring Mahesh Babu, which is currently under production.

How SS Rajamouli beat legends of Indian cinema

The global success of both Baahubali 2 and RRR has allowed Rajamouli to move past some of the most successful filmmakers from Bollywood in overall box office gross. The next name in the list is Rohit Shetty, whose films have earned over Rs 2800 crore worldwide. He is followed Nitesh Tiwari (largely due to Dangal), Siddharth Anand, and Rajkumar Hirani, all with Rs 2400 crore. The only other filmmakers whose films have grossed Rs 2000 crore are Kannada director Prasanth Neel and Tamil great S Shankar. Atlee, Kabir Khan, and Ali Abbas Zafar round up the top ten.
