Jailer has done the unthinkable. It has breached the 500-crore mark at the global box office, something that no Tamil film has managed in the last ten years and only one other Tamil film has managed in the entire history of Kollywood. The film is now steadily climbing the list of the highest grossing Indian films of all time.
On Sunday, the film’s eleventh day of release, Jailer earned Rs 19.20 crore net in India – Rs 14 crore in Tamil, Rs 4 crore in Telugu, Rs 70 lakhs in Hindi, and Rs 50 lakhs in Kannada. This has now taken the film’s overall net earnings to Rs 281.60 crore, the second-highest for any Tamil film in history. The film saw a very strong second weekend, earning Rs 45 crore between Friday and Saturday.
In addition, the Rajinikanth-starrer has done very well overseas as well. In the foreign markets, Jailer has earned $22 million (Rs 180 crore) surpassing the collections of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan in some territories as well. This means that on Sunday, the film’s worldwide gross crossed Rs 500 crore. The film has now earned Rs 510.60 crore worldwide, surpassing the lifetime haul of Ponniyin Selvan 1 (Rs 487 crore).
Only one Tamil film – Rajinikanth’s 2.0 – is now ahead of it. The Shankar film had earned Rs 776 crore upon its release a decade ago. It looks unlikely that Jailer will be able to challenge that figure but it looks set to surpass some other Indian blockbusters before the end of its run. If the current trend continues, Jailer should surpass the lifetime collections of Dhoom 3 and Tiger Zinda Hai (both (Rs 558 crore), as well as Padmaavat (Rs 585 crore) soon, and should also have Sanju (Rs 589 crore) in its sights. If it manages to overtake Baahubali: The Beginning (Rs 650 crore), Jailer will also enter the list of top 10 highest grossing Indian films of all time.
