Warner Bros yet again makes a controversial casting choice. Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Superman's arch nemesis Lex Luthor in the sequel to Zack Snyder's 'Man Of Steel'. Warner Bros is on a roll, first casting Ben Affleck as Batman, then Gal Gagot as Wonder Woman and now Eisenberg as Luthor, all of which got a backlash of negativity from the public.
Zack Snyder released a statement via Warner Bros about Eisenberg's casting on Friday:
“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
Now, granted Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor is a little out-of-the-box, but then again Zack Snyder does have a knack for picking unlikely actors and making them fit the role. Einsenberg has proven through his Oscar nominated role in 'The Social Network' that he can in fact play a diabolic genius. Since the 'Man Of Steel' sequel will also take place within the early years of the DC Universe, Eisenberg looking much younger than the 30-year-old he actually is, shouldn't be a problem. He's also the same age as Henry Cavill, who plays Superman. Even though Eisenberg isn't physically similar to Lex Luthor, he'll be able to compensate with his on-screen presence.
Jeremy Irons has also been cast as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's butler and one of the most consistent supporting characters in the Batman mythos.
The film will open in May 2016.
