Sarita Choudhury, who turned into a recluse when the controversy (over the nudity in the film) broke out, admits that she “was scared to see what was happening around” (when the film released).

Her portrayal of the cuckolded queen Tara in Mira Nair’s Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996) still remains as one of the most uninhibited performances on-screen. Actress Sarita Choudhury, who turned into a recluse when the controversy (over the nudity in the film) broke out, admits that she “was scared to see what was happening around” (when the film released).

“Do you really think that I should have come back to India?” she asks frankly, adding, “I was really scared. There was so much censorship around that I was hesitant (to come to India during that time). I will do stuff in movies but in real life, I am shy person. The controversy scared me.”

The Mississippi Masala actress says that these days her life revolves around her seven-year-old daughter Maria. She lovingly asks her daughter to sit on her lap as we talk. “She is such an actress! I think she is more of the Bollywood type. All her teachers tell me that she loves to perform.”

When Sarita was just getting used to her new-found fame, she suddenly gave up films and worked in theatre for the next three years. So, why did he suddenly decide to do an Indian film again?

“I am so lazy. I came here (to India) last year and I met Sona (Jain, the director of her upcoming film For Real). I told her that I am mad that I am not doing an Indian film. So, here I am,” she says with a laugh.
