Off screen couple, actors Anupam and Kirron Kher will be starring in director Rakeysh Mehra’s ‘Rang De Basanti’ this January. Alas! They have no scenes together.
While Kirron Kher will be playing Aamir’s mother, Anupam will be father to Kunal Kapoor in the film.
Says Kirron about her role, “It’s a character of a rustic woman. She is Punjab personified. I have just two to three scenes but I wanted to be part of this project because I liked the concept of the film.”
“My role is more like a guest appearance where I am playing the father of one of the boys but I have no scenes with Kirron in the movie. We haven’t acted together for ages now. We last did a play ‘Saalgirah’ together a few years ago,” says Anupam matter-of-factly.
They had last shared screen time in the 1988 film ‘Pestonjee’, directed by Vijaya Mehta. While the couple starred in Yash Chopra’s ‘Veer Zaara’ recently, they had no scenes together.
So was it a package deal for Rakeysh Mehra to get the husband and wife in ‘Rang De Bsanti’?
“No, he met both of us separately but he had told me that he wanted Anupam for another role in the film.” Pity that they haven’t been able to share screen time since their last attempt in ‘Pestonjee’ 17 years ago?
Says Kirron, “I don’t know why people are not approaching us to do a film together. It would be lovely to do a film together but I guess the roles would have to be of equal importance.”
