For 90's kids, Cartoon Network was a staple of their television diet. Shows like Swat Kats, Dexter's Laboratory and Johnny Bravo are still fondly remembered. So rumours of a movie adaptation of Captain Planet have been meet with rejoicing online.
According to Hollywood Reporter, one of the producers is none other than the inimitable Leonardo Di Caprio, alongside Jennifer Davisson. In addition, Jono Matt (Sons of Anarchy) and Glen Powell (Scream Queens) are being considered to write the script. Powell may also be filling one of the roles in the cartoon-turned the movie.
Reports say Di Caprio's production house Appian Way Productions has partnered up with Paramount Pictures to bring the environment-friendly superhero to the big screen, and a sneak peek will be available some time in March 2017. Not surprising, for an actor who's first ever Oscar speech contained a warning of climate change.
Captain Planet originally aired between 1990 and 1992, focused around five young 'Planeteers', teenagers tasked by the spirit of the earth to save the world. With five magical rings in their possession, Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart, the group would regularly thwart the dastardly plans of villains, usually focused on somehow polluting the planet.
According to early whispers however, the movie will take on a much darker tone. Set in a world where no one cares about the environment, Captain Planet is a forgotten relic who needs his Planeteers much more than they need him.
