Some of the biggest names from the world of theatre lined up on Broadway to pay tribute to the late Natasha Richardson.

Richardson's husband actor Niam Leeson, came out of mourning to attend the tribute and was hugged by "Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker, who was present with husband Matthew Broderick, reported Daily Mail.

Both Parker and Broderick are stage regulars and began their career in theatre.

And despite Natasha's strong British roots, the location of the tribute proved all the more fitting, as it was on Broadway that Neeson, now 56, first met his wife of 15 years in 1992.

At 8 pm the lights of New York's Broadway theatre district were dimmed for a minute in her honour. The solemn crowd applauded as Broadway's theatres turned off their lights one by one.

Richardson's uncle, actor Corin Redgrave, led the tributes to his "adorable" and "generous" niece, which was also attended by her grieving mother Vanessa Redgrave.

The occasion saw many tearful adieus to the 45-year-old actress, who died two days earlier of a head injury suffered during a skiing accident in Canada. Oscar nominated director Sam Mendes, Jeremy Irons, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench were amongst others present.
