Reewa Rathod

It’s the sound of the tanpura that Reewa Rathod associates with growing up in her house.

It’s the sound of the tanpura that Reewa Rathod associates with growing up in her house. That’s because the singer-composer’s parents are the illustrious Roop Kumar Rathod and Sunali Rathod. “I have been taught to listen to good music,” says the trained singer, whose debut single, Maula, has been written by none other than Gulzar. Over to Reewa...

My debut single

Gulzar saab is one of the most divine souls I have come across in my life. He has inspired me to create Maula and I think his lyrics have brought my song to life. I have known him since childhood and I would often go to his house and paint, as I was very fond of painting. One day, I played him a song that I had written and composed and he was quite amazed and intrigued by my style of composition. He heard it a couple of times and told me that we should do an album together. I couldn’t believe my ears! He wrote Maula, which is the first song of the album. It is a tribute to love and nature and the everlasting hope that empowers us. I really wanted to do something unexpected and it’s unique and different. I have challenged my limits with this number by including a lot of vocal technique.

Exploring music

I listen to all sorts of genres but I have my own style as a composer. Composing is an intuitive act. It just happens. I compose a line, and then I explore what else I can do with it. As for singing or composing, I love both equally. I would love to lend my voice wherever I can.
