It was in the 90s that the trend of releasing Tamil and Telugu films in Hindi began with Kamal Haasan’s Indian becoming Hindustani. As the century turned, many south masala films dominated the television sets with Indra, Mass, and Magadheera all attaining cult status among Hindi audiences. But the theatrical dominance was largely limited to the two superstars – Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. One superstar changed that, and how. As things stand today, this Telugu actor not only has the most movies in the top 10 dubbed releases in India but surpasses his seniors quite easily.
The south stars with most hits in Hindi
Even as Kamal Haasan has Viswaroopam and Rajinikanth stunned everyone with Enthiran and 2.0, their box office receipts in Hindi are no match for Prabhas. The Rebel Star gained nationwide fame with SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali films, both of which set fire to the box office. The actor has three more films in the top-10 highest grossing Hindi-dubbed films. His most recent release Kalki 2898 AD has already earned over Rs 250 crore in Hindi and is climbing fast. Both Salaar and Saaho also earned in excess of Rs 100 crore. With the exception of Radhe Shyam and Adipurush, Prabhas has seen all his Hindi-dubbed film succeed at the box office in the last nine years.
Just how far ahead of competition is Prabhas?
In totality, Prabhas’ last seven films’ Hindi versions have netted over Rs 1300 crore in India alone. Kannada star Yash is his closest rival here with his two KGF films grossing over Rs 480 crore in Hindi. Other heroes are all far behind. Rajinikanth’s films have netted just over Rs 350 crore in Hindi since 2000, while Kamal Haasan, Jr NTR, and Ram Charan have all managed between Rs 200-300 crore. Allu Arjun just has Pushpa, which earned Rs 108 crore in Hindi.
