YouTube will soon have a new king. T-Series, one of the country’s biggest record labels, is set to overcome YouTube PewDiePie as the most-subscribed channel on the world’s most popular video site in the next two weeks.
At the time of writing, PewDewPie has 70,247,349, while T-Series levels up with 70,173,913 subscribers.
The company’s ascent has shocked the online community with many hoping to delay the inevitable, a task quite futile given India’s population, broadband reach and falling data prices.
More than half of YouTube’s Top 10 channels are from outside the US and it’s a testament to the fact that YouTube is no longer a site for viral cat videos and pranks.
T-Series already operates 29 channels and boasts over a 100 million combined YouTube subscribed and will be the first non-English channel to climb to the top of the mountain.
Earlier, fans of the YouTube star were reporting the T-Series channel hoping to hit its popularity.
Addressing the issue, Neeraj Kalyan, President, T-Series, who also heads the Digital division had said in September , "It's a matter of pride for all Indians that an Indian YouTube Channel will soon be world's biggest channel on YouTube. But it seems a set of overzealous PewDiePie fans are negatively spamming T-Series channel on YouTube. I would like to inform them that we are not perturbed by this kind of behaviour.
"T-Series is a well-respected platform for Indian music and promoting new talent is part of our DNA. We will continue to build and grow our fan base globally. No amount of spamming will be able to hold back the power of good music."
"PewDiePie is indeed a good channel and there is no competition between T-Series & PewDiePie as both have different sets of audiences. I wish all the very best to PewDiePie," he said in a statement sent to DNA.
