Kunal Kapoor’s love affair with Shakespeare seems set to continue. After transforming his physique to play the anti-hero Macbeth in the trilingual Veeram, Kunal is all set to visit the world of Shakespeare again. This time he plays a drama teacher, teaching Shakespeare, in The Noblemen. But more interestingly the actor is planning to do a play this year — written by him. Kunal started off doing theatre and has worked with Barry John and was also part of Naseeruddin Shah’s Motley Group. He was recently part of a Punjabi Urdu play called Ek Punjab Aisa Bhi based on stories around the partition.
Kunal confirms, “Yes I am planning to do something this year but it’s too early to talk about it right now. All I can say is that it is based on a short story that we are working on and developing.”
Ask him about what draws so many actors to Shakespeare, he says, “The ranges of Shakespeare’s characters are just enormous. Each character, whether it’s a man or woman, prince or pauper, hero or anti hero, is so complex, layered and yet deeply identifiable. And his stories are timeless.”
Talking about The Noblemen, the actor says, “I have had the opportunity to play such varied characters in the last year. This again, is very different from anything I have done before. The character is rebellious, and his teaching methods unique and unconventional. I connected deeply with that rebellion. With the need to break stereotypical ideas about how things should be done.”
