It looks like all the mehnat and the anticipatory method-acting that Priyanka Chopra indulged in to get the ‘look’ for the Mary Kom biopic, has gone waste. The film’s producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali and director Omang Kumar have decided that the biopic would avoid the pitfalls of trying to get Priyanka to resemble Mary Kom onscreen. A Hollywood make-up artist was hired to do a prosthetic makeover by giving PC heavier eyelids for a more Asian look. It is hinted that the filmmakers were worried those prosthetics would not hold during heavy action boxing bouts. So now that will be taken care of in special effects, which will be done by SRK’s Red Chillies VFX.
Says a source, “Priyanka wants to connect closely with Mary Kom on both the emotional and physical levels. She had, on her own, got a prosthetics test done in the US with the American make-up artiste Mark Garbarino.” However, it was mutually felt by the producer and director that it’s for the best to avoid inducing a physical similarity between the actress and the real-life personality.
Adds the source, “Priyanka may end up looking like a caricatural avatar of Mary Kom. When Robert Downey Jr played Charlie Chaplin he didn’t try to physically resemble Chaplin. The best way to approach Mary Kom’s role would be to not try too hard too look like her. So no prosthetics.”
