It was a proud day for Kannada film industry at the 56th National Film Awards on Saturday. Two Kannada films clinched top honours when Vimukthi, directed by P Sheshadri, bagged the award for the best regional film and Gubbachigalu, directed by Abhay Simha, for the best children’s film.

Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Saturday said the state government will organise a special function to honour the award winners.

Bengali film Antaheen won the best feature film award.  Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion, a dark tale about the Indian fashion industry, won its heroine Priyanka Chopra the best actress award and got Kangana Ranaut the best supporting actress honour, Farhan Akhtar’s cult music-based film Rock On!! got the best Hindi film award. Sheshadri is the only Kannada film director to have won five awards for all the five films he has directed so far. His first film Munnudi (2000) won the best film award on social issues.  It also won a state government award. His other films Athithi, Thuththoori, Beru and Vimukthi have earned him national awards.
