They have done it. In addition to sharing their lives, they have gone on to prove that a couple can push their limits to get involved in each other’s work. Directors Pushkar and Gayatri, whose recent hatke release Va — Quarter Cutting, is second to yet another successful venture Oram Po. This has only gone on to help them break quite a few myths that the industry has grown to believe.
The advantage, however, comes in the ability to work with a team that understands where you come from.
“For instance, Va is a story that takes place in just a night. It begins at 6.30pm and ends at 6.30am. It’s a journey of two characters played by Shiva and Charan. Shiva leaves for Saudi Arabia. The next day, he meets Charan, who will marry his sister. Initially, they share cold vibes. But this story is about their journey — the people they meet and how they change during that one night. The film was shot mostly during the night, and that’s when a great team works perfectly well,” explains Pushkar.
“I think Gayatri and I are a lot like the kind of couples who rarely argue. There is hardly any difference of opinion between us. In case we do have any, we make sure that we take up an idea only when both of us are convinced. Since we knew each other from college, we sort of know our likes and work accordingly,” he explains. Pushkar also informs that a small place at Nungambakkam in Chennai is their favourite place to write scripts.
The director also reveals that many people in the industry warned them about working together. “A lot of people said that it was not a good idea for us to debut together. But I think we’ve managed to break through a few of the barriers of thought,” he signs off.
