Rating: ***1/2
Galti ko maaf karna sabse badi galti hain — that’s the premise on which Mumbai’s underbelly functions. Why are we talking about that though... well simply because this week’s Kannada release Edegarike echoes this sentiment.
The film which is based on Agni Shridhar’s much debated book that comes with the same name, reflects the emotional side of those in the underworld. In a sensitive manner, the film tells the story of Sona (Adithya), a supari killer. While those of you who have read the book will know how the story unfolds, we suggest the rest of you go watch the film to find out all about a shooter’s final encounter with death. The film remains loyal to the book and comes only with a few changes that are needed to cater to cinematic sensibilities. The script and screenplay is aptly supported by hard hitting and thought provoking dialogues that keep you involved throughout. You will find yourself even more engaged if you have not read the book. And for those of you who have, the actors take it upon themselves to retain your interest. Director Suman Kittur has managed to extract stellar performances from each of her actors. Lead actors Adithya and Atul Kulkarni steal the show with their understated acts. Post Edegarike, Adithya’s fan base is sure to see an increase.
This most definitely is his best performance. Akanksha makes the most of her screen presence. The film also stands out for its crisp characterisation. Crime is also not glorified. The background score adds depth to the film. Suman restricts herself to just one song which beautifully blends with the plot. Making a novel-based film is bound to generate comparisons, but we surely felt that the film, just like the book, succeeds in developing an emotional connect. Take time off to watch the film, more so if you are tired of the same old formula films.
