Why would someone want to do a song about pornographic comic strip heroine Savita Bhabhi, by now a legendary Indian porn figure?
"In March, Savita Bhabhi had become a rage. Everyone was talking about her, so we wanted to do something fun with her," says Joydeep Dasgupta, guitarist of Hindi rock band Shor Bazaar.
Now, with the website having been banned, the song has become a tribute to the sultry housewife heroine of the comic strip. "We didn't know it was going to get banned," said Dasgupta. The song is funny and cheeky, yet it has some great guitar play and arrangements. In fact, the band has two versions of the song, including one that is heavier.
The band will perform the song for the first time at a live performance at the Daddy’s Windsong Wednesdays at Il Terazzo on Wednesday, July 29.
Its other songs, too, have been light-hearted takes on topics inspired by real-life incidents like school bullies without really going into crass humour or doing something completely comic.
"I definitely cannot write about a kisan waiting for the rains," says Dasgupta aka JD. "I'm bound to write about something that I identify with."
Why a Hindi band? JD, who writes the band's songs, says, "I think in Hindi and I am most comfortable in Hindi."
"That, I think, will be our USP," he adds.
Robin, the youngest member of the band, is also the quietest. He is in his second year in college, studying for a bachelor's degree in commerce. KK and Dasgupta keep regular jobs to support themselves.
"I and JD both quit our jobs, but turns out he has more savings! So he's still chilling while I had to find a job," says KK.
Though they are on the lookout for a permanent drummer, they have been jamming with Jai Rao Kavi who has been with bands like Zero before.
