With ‘Breaking News’ up for release, the danseuse cum actor wants to do hatke roles

Smilie Suri finally got a chance to showcase her talent for dance with her performance at the recently held International Dance Festival.

Incidentally, Smilie, sister of director Mohit Suri, who debuted with Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Kalyug’ is well-versed in varied dance forms from kathak to salsa! Talking about her pet-passion, Smilie says, “I have been dancing since the age of three. I began talking and dancing around the same time (laughs)! I started by learning kathak,” says Smilie who has trained with instructors Shiamak Davar and Sandip Soparrkar. From them she learnt the nuances of Western dances including flamenco, salsa and samba.

“I love Latin dance for its sheer variation and geometric precision. While the meringue is a slow form, samba is a vivacious, celebratory dance and salsa is a classy one!” says Smilie, who showcased her talents in meringue and samba at the dance festival. “It’s high time the industry saw the dancer in me.  In fact, I’m in talks for two such projects,” says Smilie, who as of now, has N Chandra’s film ‘Breaking News’ up for release. “I play a Maharashtrian girl working in a call centre. The film has been taken to Cannes where it has received good reviews. I have high hopes from this project” admits Smilie.

“I’m looking for glamorous roles. After ‘Kalyug’, I have been slotted as the ‘sweet’ heroine. I want to break that image and do some hatke, sassy roles now,” she ends.
