Marathi film industry seems to be evolving with each passing day. And a pure example of its growing limits is how Nagraj Manjule's latest film Sairat has turned out to be a blockbuster at the box office.
Sairat spelled success from the word go and has, in fact, recorded a box office figure which is at par with most Bollywood films starring big heavyweight actors. The film has already raked in over Rs 80 crore at the box office and is still playing to full houses. The film has become the first Marathi film to gross over Rs 100 crore worldwide and it's no mean feat.
Now, the success of the film has translated into something special. The film will now be remade in four different South Indian languages. Sairat will now be made in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam and the remake rights have been acquired by Rocky Venkatesh.
Venkatesh will now jointly produce the southern remakes with the producers of Sairat. Casting begins in a few weeks and the makers plan to roll the film in August. Starring Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar in lead roles, the film tells the story of a love story doomed by the religious fundamentalism.
