Watching Sunil Grover’s hour-long special with Salman Khan on Saturday night was a humbling experience….humbling for viewers and for Sunil Grover who in recent months has been making a lot of news for his acrimonious parting with Kapil Sharma. But here’s the thing - If Kapil’s show has suffered because of the fallout with Sunil Grover, it seems Sunil has suffered no less a loss.
His maiden venture on television post the breakup was a disappointment. Maybe I expected too much from it, having known that Salman Khan opted for a special segment on Tubelight with Sunil Grover instead of going on Sunil Grover’s show. Perhaps I expected too much from this quasi-historic episode where Grover returned to the channel he had left in a huff only for Salman’s sake.
And what did Grover bring to the ‘special’ show? Nothing special, I am afraid. It was all familiar territory, been there done it all. Salman could barely hide his boredom as he was put on the operation table by Dr Mashoor Gulati (Grover’s doctor avatar from The Kapil Sharma Show). Salman looked uncomfortable and disinterested while Sohail Khan and Aparshakti Khurrana looked on at the goings-on with ill-concealed impatience.
The next item had Sunil Grover dressed up as Amitabh Bachchan doing a Kaun Banega Crorepati with Salman and Sohail. And in the final section, we had stand up comedian Sanket Bhosle doing his tired Sanjay Dutt act. In between there was absolutely nothing here to give us hope beyond The Kapil Sharma Show.
There was a clear lesson to be obtained from the Tubelight special with Sunil Grover. Grover’s immense talent needs to be propped by the efficient captaincy of Kapil Sharma. Sunil Grover, please go back to the Kapil Sharma Show.
