Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on Friday afternoon in Chennai. The 74-year-old Balasubrahmanyam, popularly known as SPB, was admitted on August 5, at the MGM Healthcare in Chennai after he tested positive for COVID-19. On September 7, he had tested negative but continued to stay on a ventilator.
PB Charan, SP Balasubrahmanyam's son came out of the hospital and announced at the gates that SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away at 1:04 pm today and thanked all those who prayed for the singer’s recovery.
After his passing today, several celebs and SPB's fans on Twitter paid a heartfelt tribute to the legend. Have a look at them here.
On Thursday, soon after learning that veteran playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam's health has deteriorated and he is 'critical', actor-politician Kamal Haasan visited him at MGM hospital in Chennai. In a media byte, Haasan had said, "Life support machines are in use, can't say he's doing well. He's very critical, everyone is praying to the almighty." In an earlier tweet, Haasan had fondly recalled how SPB was his on-screen voice and he as an actor was SPB's face.
Born Sripathi Paditha Arathyula Balasubramaniam, in 1946, to Nelloor-based Harikatha exponent Sambamurthy, SPB’s ambition was to become an engineer. His failure to clear a subject in his PUC course forced him to pursue the now-defunct AMIE course in Chennai. But the music in his blood lured him towards singing competitions, and finally to the film world.
