The 41-year-old Malayalam director who has helmed films like Traffic, Mili and Vettah, was in a critical condition in Kochi. He passed away on Saturday. Rajesh Pillai was considered one of the path-breakers in Malayalam cinema with his films.

It looks like the director was suffering from liver cirrhosis and had been undergoing treatment for a while now. He was in need of a liver transplant say reports. He was in PVS Hospital in Kochi where he hadbeen admitted for some time now. While shooting for his latest film Vettah he had been hospitalised numerous times. But when he got pneumonia his condition became critical say reports.

He began his career in 2005 with  Hridayathil Sookshikkan. He has made five films in his career the latest being Vettah that released on Friday. He remade his hit film Traffic in Hindi as well in 2015. He is survived by his wife.
