The start of the new season of True Detective was not very impressive. Okay, we know who has come from what background, and now all our detectives and villains and minor players are in place to play the very obvious game of cat-and-mouse.

The promo of episode two, Night Finds You, starts with suggestions towards a window, an opportunity to catch 'the culprit'. Velcoro (Colin Farrell) and Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) have no clue if city planner Ben Caspere's death is related to a prostitution ring, given his penchant for all things naughty and nasty, or something bigger than that, maybe related to high-speed rail plans.

Bezzerrides is being warned against Velcoro, who we know from the premier episode is with Frank Seymon (Vince Vaughn) because of personal, and later on monetary, favours from the latter. Bezzerrides is up front and asks Velcoro about the level of his disloyalty.

Woodrough (Taylor Kitsch) on the other hand, is still struggling with his personal life. In the first episode we saw him find Caspere when he was about to end his life by driving without lights in the night on the state highway.

Frank Seymon is a career criminal, transitioning towards becoming a clean entrepreneur. Calm on the surface, Frank this time may not be able to control himself and is taking matters into his own hands. So the path to clean entrepreneurship will have to wait.

The beginning was all things obvious. From the start we are told that Frank is the bad guy. So is it the story of how we are going to catch the bad guy? Or how these messed up detectives will find their place in the world?

The quick build up will prove a boon for an eight part story. The promo for the second episode looks a lot more promising than what the season premiere delivered.
