It’s been a while since we saw actor Sudeep in a Kannada film but this weekend he returns to the big screen with a bang. Sudeep’s first release of 2013, Varadanayaka sees him play a cop, a role that his fans love to see him play and the actor doesn’t disappoint, making the wait worth it.

Varadayanaka is the story of  a fearless police officer and his younger brother. Both his family and the city are in peace as long as he is around. However, things start changing after Varada goes after Section Shankar, a criminal, who is wanted in a bank fraud case. Can Varadanayaka and his brother, played by Cheeranjeevi Sarja, put a fullstop to the atrocities of the goon?

Varadanayaka is a remake of the Telugu film, Lakshyam. But director Ayyappa ably supported by Sudeep has ensured that the film meets the expectations of a Kannada film fan.

In fact, the script and screenplay are the film’s true heroes. It comes with the right amount of action, comedy and sentiments and who better than Sudeep to carry the film on his shoulders. His entry is power-packed and he manages to retain the same energy and attitude through the film making it a full on paisa vasool experience especially for his fans.

As for Cheeranjeevi Sarja, he manages fine in the action sequences. Despite the senior actor’s presence, there is enough scope for Chiru to make his presence felt, yet it is Sudeep’s act that leaves an impact on you. Sameera Reddy who makes her Sandalwood debut with this film, is seen in a de-glam avatar.

Nikesha Patel makes the most of her limited screen presence. It is a delight to see Mukhyamantri Chandru back on screen. Ravishankar is aptly cast as the baddie. Actor Ambareesh’s special appearance will please the audience. As for music, Baite baite... is the only song that will stay with you even after you leave the movie hall.

So what’s our verdict? If you are a fan of commercial potboilers then Varadanayaka will make for an ideal weekend watch.
