It’s a trend that has already caught on in the West with the likes of Rihanna and Lindsay Lohan sporting them time and again. As a matter of fact, with sporty fashion making more waves than ever before, it should not come as a surprise.

So while Manish Malhotra had sari blouses with racer-back silhouettes, Narendra Kumar thinks the vest dress takes the trend one step further. β€œI guess sleeveless jerseys are very comfortable to wear and hence have been popular all along. So understandably, the vest dress β€” which even resembles a tunic at times β€” is but a longer silhouette along the same lines.”

Monisha Jaising feels that the vest dress is all about comfort and hence its appeal is not bound by seasons. β€œIt can come in many different versions. For example, one of my creations is a sequinned dress with the racer-back of a vest. So the dress can be worn as evening wear too. Similarly, there are vest dresses which are modelled after the short sleeve vest and then there are ones with the ganji front. All in all, these silhouettes are the kind that would work through the year,” she explains.

For Rocky S, it’s about interesting layering. β€œSince a vest dress is a sleeveless one, it can be worn with or without a shirt or tee. You can either dress it up for an evening out or for a formal occasion. Without the shirt, it can make for a glamourous summer dress too. So it’s all about how you want to play it up,” he points out.

Arshiya Fakih is quick to warn that the vest dress is not meant for everyone. β€œThe silhouette is such that only slim people can really carry it off. A large person in a vest dress could spell disaster.”
