After Barack Obama claimed his place in history as America's first black president, Walt Disney has introduced its first black American Princess.

Princess Tiana, of the animated film The Princess and the Frog, hails from New Orleans.

Dreamgirls star Anika Noni Rose will lend her voice for the character and talk show queen Oprah Winfrey plays her mother. Rose says that she is thrilled with the film.

"This feels amazing," The New York Daily News quoted Rose as telling People magazine.

"Not only is she the first black princess, she's the first American princess. We've never had an American princess.

"So the scope and significance is larger than people even realize," she added.
