Disney and Pixar released the first trailer of Cars 3 and have made sure that we know "it's not over until the lightning strikes".
The new trailer starts with the cars competing to win the Piston Cup. Cutting through the crowd, we zoom in on 'rookie sensation' Jackson Storm. This is where fans of the first movie in the series will realise that Lightning McQueen is fading. He wore the patch of 'rookie sensation' with pride. The red revver has come a long way since.
In the trailer, we see McQueen crash out of the race. He is told, "You will never be the racer you once were. Accept it." So when you are burnt, hurt, and need to lick your wound, where do you go? If you are McQueen, you go to Radiator Springs.
While McQueen's opponent is relying on high-tech simulations and new means of practice, our roadster goes home. We see him take a look at the forlorn Rust-eze training centre once dedicated to him. But even Lightning needs a ray of sunshine.
He is advised, "You'll never be as fast, but you can be smarter."
Then we see Cruz Ramirez. She tells stubborn McQueen that he needs her help. We see some tough shots of racing, one massive explosion, and McQueen announces, "I am coming for you, Storm."
The trailer obviously ends with the crowd cheering for McQueen, an assurance for fans that the story has a happy ending for the revver.
Owen Wilson is back to voice McQueen. Armie Hammer will be the voice of the villainous Jackson Storm and Cristela Alonzo will be voicing Cruz Ramirez.
Brian Fee, who earlier worked on the storyboards of Cars 2, is helming the project. Cars 3 will be arriving in theatres on June 16, 2017.
