With Petta amassing Rs 220 crore from worldwide theatrical sales in 18 days, Superstar Rajinikanth has become the only South Indian actor to possess four double-century grossers in his career. His other films that have breached past the Rs 200 crore global gross milestone include 2.0, Enthiran, and Kabali.
At 68, Rajinikanth still continues to command immense fan following across the length and breadth of South India and Petta is yet another substantiation for the Kaala actor's undying fandom. If you take the Tamil version of Petta alone into account, it has raked in nearly Rs 203 crore globally. Prabhas and Vijay are the only other heroes who have two double century grossers in their kitty. While Prabhas attained the feat with ace filmmaker SS Rajamouli's Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion, Vijay set the cash registers ringing with director Atlee's Mersal and AR Murugadoss' Sarkar.
Directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by Sun Pictures, Petta has taken home earnings of $10.25 million (Rs 72.4 crore) from overseas territories. The project marks Rajinikanth's fourth $10 million grosser in overseas regions after 2.0, Kabali, and Enthiran. Again, he's the only actor from South India to have four $10 million grossers from offshore centers. The USA, where Rajinikanth enjoys numero-uno box-office clout, has contributed the lion's share of the foreign revenue with over $2.5 million (Rs 17.8 crore).
The film, which also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vijay Sethupathi in crucial roles, has already grossed Rs 100 crore in Tamil Nadu box-office alone, making Petta the third film of Rajinikanth to do so after 2.0 and Enthiran.
