Roberto Carlos earned fame not so much for his defensive skills and pace up the flanks as a left-back, but for the remarkable ferocity of his free kicks. No wonder they called him ‘El Hombre Bala’ or ‘The Bullet Man’. Making his debut for the Seleção in 1992, Carlos appeared in three World Cups, helping the team reach the final in 1998 before playing a crucial role in the their fifth World Cup triumph in South Korea and Japan in 2002. He announced his retirement from international football after Brazil’s 0-1 loss to France in the quarterfinals of the 2006 edition in Germany.
