Diabetes diet: 5 healthy carbs for people with Type 2 diabetes

Whole grain pasta is a bigger source of carbohydrates as it contains high fibre, unlike white pasta. When you're making a grain-based starch selection, think of nutritious whole grains, like barley, quinoa, whole-grain couscous, whole-wheat pasta, and brown rice, instead of refined white pasta and white rice. 

Whole-grain bread contains healthy fibre, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Hence, you can take it in breakfast instead of white bread.

Beans, such as black and kidney beans (rajma), are high in carbohydrates compared with many other plant sources, but they’re recommended when building your diabetes diet. They are a fibre-packed source of carbohydrates.

One can also include nuts in his/her diet as they are also high in carbs. Just keep in mind that they're also high in calories because of their fat content, so enjoy them in moderation as part of a healthy diabetes diet.

According to the USDA, 1 ounce (oz) of walnuts has only 4 g of carbohydrates, 1 oz of almonds has 5.5 g of carbohydrates, and 1 oz of in-shell pistachios has 4 g of carbohydrates.

Fruits are packed with vitamins and disease-fighting antioxidants as well as fibre along with naturally occurring sugar. However, experts suggest sticking to one serving at a time. So, one should also monitor his/her blood sugar to see how certain fruits are impacting, they added.
