The BJP has decided to set in motion the process for organisational polls from September 11 that are expected to culminate by January next year with a new president taking over from the current chief Amit Shah who is currently doubling up as the Union home minister.
Veteran party leader Radha Mohan Singh, who was appointed as BJP National Election Officer to oversee party's inner elections, on Tuesday announced that the process of organisational polls will start with booth level on September 11 and culminate with elections for state presidents and national council members on December 15.
According to BJP's election itinerary, after completion of the membership drive by August 20, election at booth level will begin on September 11 and completed by September 30. It will be followed by completion of elections for Mandal presidents and then district presidents by November 30. The elections for the state presidents will complete by December 15. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Singh who deliberated over organisational polls with party's poll in-charges and co-in-charges in states and UTs at BJP headquarters. The meeting was also attended by the party's working president J P Nadda and general secretary (organisation) B L Santosh.
The party would require at least a month for the process to complete to elect the national president after completing organisational polls in at least 50% of states and UTs, a senior party functionary said.
