NRI orthopaedic honoured with the Hunterian award

Dr Shetty is Chair and Director of stem cell research at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Professor Anantram Asode Shetty, a UK-based orthopaedic surgeon of Indian origin has won the prestigious Hunterian Professor Award 2017, given out by the Royal College of Surgeons of England for his research on stem cell therapy in articular cartilage repair. Dr Shetty is Chair and Director of stem cell research at Canterbury Christ Church University. Two years ago, he set up one of India’s largest cell culture labs in Mangalore.

He has been awarded for pioneering the use of stem cell therapy, called Gel Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI), that allows biological implants in knee-joint restoration surgeries.
