Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers, Nihal Chand Meghwal, on Wednesday categorically ruled out resigning from the Union Cabinet, despite being under pressure to quit in connection with his role in a sexual assault case in Rajasthan.

When the minister was asked whether he will resign, he said, "Why should I give my resignation." When asked to react further on the issue, he said, "No comments."

The case was registered in 2010 by a Haryana woman at the Vaishali Nagar Police Station in Jaipur. The case was later closed, but the victim challenged the decision in a court which issued a summons to all of the 18 accused on Thursday.

The case had initially gone in favour of Meghwal, after a police investigation in the complaint found him not guilty in 2012. However, after the victim's review petition in January 2013, the case came up again, and this has landed the minister in further trouble.

In the wake of an Additional District Court in Jaipur, Rajasthan, issuing a summons to Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Nihal Chand Meghwal and 17 others in connection with a four-year-old rape case, the opposition led by the Congress Party, is demanding his resignation from the Union Cabinet.

The case was registered in 2010 by a Haryana woman at the Vaishali Nagar Police Station in Jaipur. The case was later closed, but the victim challenged the decision in a court which issued a summons to all of the 18 accused on Thursday.

The summons was issued by Additional District Judge Prem Prakash Gupta. He said that the accused must appear before him by August 20.

The case had initially gone in favour of Meghwal, after a police investigation in the complaint found him not guilty in 2012. However, after the victim's review petition in January 2013, the case came up again, and this has landed the minister in further trouble.
