Independence Day 2024 highlights: PM Modi meets and felicitates India's Paris Olympics contingent at his residence

Independence Day 2024: PM Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag on Thursday and delivered his 11th consecutive speech to the nation from the Red Fort on the occasion of 78th Independence Day.

Dressed in white kurta and blue attire and a traditional multicolour safa, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other dignitaries. 

This year's celebration marks the 11th time PM Modi will address the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, making him the third Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi to achieve this milestone.

The theme for this year's Independence Day is 'Viksit Bharat @ 2047,' aiming to drive the Government's efforts to transform India into a developed nation by 2047. Among the attendees will be the Indian contingent from the recently concluded Paris Olympics. 

Guests include tribal artisans, Van Dhan Vikas Members, and tribal entrepreneurs funded by the National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation. Also present will be students benefiting from the Atal Innovation Mission and PM SHRI (Prime Minister's Schools for Rising India) scheme, and volunteers of Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) and National Service Scheme under 'Meri Maati Mera Desh'Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM), Anganwadi workers, elected women representatives, and beneficiaries of initiatives such as Sankalp: Hub for Empowerment of Women, Lakhpati Didi and Drone Didi, Sakhi Kendra scheme, Child Welfare Committees, and District Child Protection Units will also be in attendance.

Approximately 2,000 people from various States and Union Territories, dressed in traditional attire, have been invited to witness the grand ceremony.

In a broadside against the culture of nepotism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech spoke of a "political landscape free of dynastic rule" as he gave a call to induct those with no political legacy in their families into the country's political system. 

While addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Thursday, the Prime Minister spoke about inducting one lakh youth who have no political legacy into the political system stating that the mission was aimed at fighting the "evils of nepotism and casteism" and inducting fresh blood into India's polity.

"India's democracy is being undermined by the ills of 'Parivarvad' and 'Jaativad'. It's essential to free our political landscape from the grip of dynastic rule! Our mission is to empower a new generation of leaders - one lakh young individuals who don't have any political legacy in their families," the PM said. (ANI)

PM Modi also highlighted that India is moving towards self-reliance by improving domestic manufacturing and has even started exporting to other countries.PM Modi emphasized that India has become self-reliant in mobile phone manufacturing and is now exporting to other countries. 

"There was a time when we imported mobile phones, but today we have built a mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem, and now we have started exporting mobile phones to the world," said PM Modi. Regarding the defence sector, PM Modi stated that India is becoming self-reliant in defence manufacturing. 

He said, "We are becoming self-reliant in the defence sector. Today, we have our own identity in defence equipment manufacturing. India is emerging as a defence manufacturing hub."On the toy industry, PM Modi noted that India used to import toys, but with improvements in domestic manufacturing, India now not only produces toys for domestic consumption but also exports them to other countries."In the past, it was said that toys came from abroad; today, I can proudly say that toys from my country are reaching global markets with a bang," PM Modi said. After hoisting the Tricolour the Prime Minister received a 'Rashtriya Salute'. The Punjab Regiment Military band, consisting of one JCO and 25 Other Ranks, played the National Anthem during the hositing, of the National Flag and presented the 'Rashtriya Salute'. The Band was conducted by Subedar Major Rajinder Singh.

Delhi Traffic Police issues traffic advisory for August 15, check routes to avoid

According to an official release by the Delhi police, roads including Netaji Subhash Marg, Lothian Road, SP Mukherjee Marg, Chandni Chowk Road, Nishad Raj Marg, Esplanade Road and its Link Road, Ring Road from Rajghat to ISBT, and Outer Ring Road from ISBT to IP Flyover -- will be closed from 4 am to 11 am on Tuesday for the general public.
