11% attendance is very less but I wanted to give my 100% to people of Ghatal: Dev

Actor-turned-politician Dev says whether to contest or not is not his call

11% attendance is very less but I wanted to give my 100% to people of Ghatal: Dev
Deepak Adhikari

Tollywood sensation and sitting TMC MP Deepak Adhikari (Dev) is facing a challenging task against former IPS officer and BJP candidate Bharati Ghosh in Ghatal Lok Sabha constituency of West Bengal. The actor-turned-politician talks to DNA about his dual role as an actor and parliamentarian. Excerpts:

You had earlier admitted to DNA of not being able to give 100% to people of Ghatal and not keen on contesting again. Was there any pressure?

Not really. I think it (the decision to contest) is out of the love for our Chief Minister 'Didi'. When she says something we cannot say no. She is the party supremo and she is the one who decides who contests and from where.

How do you rate your five years in Parliament?

An attendance of 11% is very less, but I believe I wanted to give my 100% to people of Ghatal. I am also an actor and that is also for the people. I also had to make sure that my film Kidnap will release during Eid, Password is set for Durga Puja and another one for Christmas. So my responsibility includes entertaining people as well. But I believe I was there during floods with relief and I also spoke about it in Parliament.

With 2.6 lakh margin, 2014 was a cakewalk for you. How's it this time?

I tried my best in the last five years. I don't know how much I was able to fulfil people's expectations.
In the Parliament, I spoke about projects such as Ghatal masterplan and Balichak bridge. Work is on for another bridge which has been in pipeline for about 7-8 years.

Some of your friends have jumped ship...

This is the face of Indian politics yaar. But let's see it as the IPL, where Dhoni is captain for Chennai Super Kings and Kohli for Bangalore. But when they play for India, they are together and we see the solidarity and the bonding.
This is what should be in Indian politics as well. I may be carrying TMC flag and my friend that of the BJP, but at the end of the day, we should be able to sit together and work together.
