Parliament Session Highlights: Lok Sabha adjourned, next session scheduled for tomorrow 11 am
The house has been adjourned. It will meet again tomorrow, June 25, at 11 am, the pro-tem speaker said.
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha beginning on June 24 will see oath-taking by newly elected members followed by election of the Lok Sabha Speaker on June 26 and President Droupadi Murmu's address to a joint sitting of both the Houses on June 27.
The row over the appointment of BJP leader and seven-term member Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem Speaker is likely to cast a shadow over the session. The move has drawn flak from the Opposition, which alleged that the government overlooked the claim of Congress member K Suresh to the post.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju asserted that Mahtab has had seven uninterrupted terms as a Lok Sabha member, making him eligible for the post, while Suresh lost elections in 1998 and 2004 which makes his current term the fourth straight one in the lower house. Earlier, he was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989, 1991, 1996 and 1999.
On Monday, President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath to Mahtab as the pro tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
Mahtab will then reach Parliament House and call the Lok Sabha to order at 11 am.
The proceedings will begin with members observing a moment of silence on the occasion of the first sitting of the 18th Lok Sabha. This will be followed by Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh placing on the table of the House the list of the members elected to the lower house.

"Betrayed people of Wayanad...": K Surendran after Rahul Gandhi writes letter to Wayanad voters
Kerala Bharatiya Janata Party President K Surendran on Sunday reacted to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's letter to Wayanad voters and said that this is merely a "political gimmick", adding that Rahul Gandhi has betrayed the people of Wayanad.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday wrote a heartfelt letter to the people of Wayanad, the constituency that he is giving up to represent Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha.
"This is nothing but a mere political gimmick. Rahul Gandhi has betrayed the Wayanad people already. He was always saying that Wayanad is my second home, my family. Now the intention behind that statement is clear. He brought his sister there, so he said all of this for his family members. This is also a gimmick, people won't believe him because he made many statements but is never true with that," said K Surendran told ANI.

'Positively looking forward for coordination to run Parliament': Kiren Rijiju
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said he was positively looking forward to coordination to run Parliament, as the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha gets underway.
In a post on X, Rijiju said he shall always be available to assist the members of Parliament as the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. "The First Session of the 18th Lok Sabha begins today, the 24th June, 2024. I welcome all the newly elected Hon'ble members. I shall be always available to assist the members as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. I'm positively looking forward to co-ordination to run the house," Rijiju said.
