Lawyer/politician became the butt of jokes on Twitter when people over his dual life. While Kapil Sibal the lawyer is among those defending Anil Ambani in the plea filed by Ericsson India, he’s also going hammer-and-tongs after Anil Ambani over the Rafale deal.

On a day when he appeared for Ambani in court, Sibal the Congressman had tweeted: “It seems Airbus, French Government, Anil Ambani all knew that the PM will sign an MOU on his visit to France between 9th and 11th April, 2015. “

Now technically there’s nothing (legally) wrong with Sibal wearing two hats but that didn’t prevent some light-hearted ribbing from Twitterati.

The Supreme Court ruled that there is no more a bar on a Member of Parliament, State Assembly or Legislative Council, from practicing as an advocate, clearing the way for several eminent lawyers elected to Parliament and Assemblies to continue in the legal profession.

The bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud said that elected MPs/MLAs/MLCs are not full-time employees, and hence they will not be disqualified under Rule 49 of the Bar Council of India Rules that prohibits lawyers from taking up any other profession.

Justice Khanwilkar, writing the judgment for the bench, said, "As regards the legislators (MP/MLA/MLC), they occupy a unique position. They are not appointed but are elected by the electors from respective territorial constituencies." The issue came to court in a PIL filed by lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay who wanted legislators to be barred from practicing before courts.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned for tomorrow the hearing on a contempt notice issued to Reliance Communication Ltd (RCom) Chairman Anil Dhirubhai Ambani and others on a plea filed by Ericsson India for allegedly not clearing its dues of Rs 550 crore.
Ambani, Reliance Telecom Ltd Chairman Satish Seth and Reliance Infratel Ltd Chairperson Chhaya Virani appeared before a bench of Justices R F Nariman and Vineet Saran in pursuance to the contempt notice issued against them.

The bench said it will continue hearing the contempt plea tomorrow due to paucity of time and assembling of a special bench in the post lunch session.

During the brief hearing, senior advocate Dushyant Dave, appearing for Ericsson India, said there was gross violation of apex court's two earlier orders and they (RCom) have not paid any outstanding dues.

The bench asked the three alleged contemnors to remain present in court tomorrow.
