Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today shared pictures of India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge Pamban in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge is expected to be ready for use by March next year.
Earlier, the Ministry of Railways had shared some pictures of the new Pamban bridge via a Twitter post. Calling it an engineering marvel, the ministry said, "This dual-track state-of-the-art bridge will be the country's first vertical lift railway sea bridge and is expected to be completed by March 2022."
The old Pamban Bridge is said to have played a crucial role in connecting Pamban Island with mainland India. In the coming months, the old bridge would be replaced by the new Pamban Bridge, for which an estimated amount of Rs 250 crore is being invested.
1. Pamban is 2-km-long sea bridge
The new Pamban is a 2-km-long sea bridge linking the island of Rameswaram in the Arabian Sea to the mainland. It will replace the existing 104-year-old structure.

2. The bridge will have 63-metre stretch
The bridge will have a 63-metre stretch, which will lift up vertically to allow passage to small ships. The bridge has 101 piers and it will be 3-metre higher than the existing one, providing more navigational air clearance for vessels to pass.
