Too many laws create confusion for the government, the judiciary and the common man and the government is cleaning up the statute book, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday. In his address from the ramparts of Red Fort, he said his government has embarked upon the exercise of cleaning up laws that create hurdles.
He said over 1,000 outdated laws have been removed from the statute as the government has identified 1,741 obsolete Acts for repealing. This is the first time since 2001 that an exercise is undertaken to repeal outdated law which are hindering efficient governance. Between 1950 and 2001, over 100 Acts were repealed.
