Two senior government officials were arrested today for their alleged involvement in the embezzlement of pipes which caused a loss of over Rs 34 lakh to the state exchequer, Jammu and Kashmir State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) said.

The officials, the then Assistant Executive Engineer Public Health Engineering Sub Division First Zainakot Rakesh Kumar and the then Junior Engineer Syed Aijaz Hussain, were arrested as they are accused in a case registered in 2014 in police station Vigilance of Kashmir Srinagar, the spokesman said.

He said the case was registered following a verification which revealed that on September 26, 2013, Public Health Engineering (M&P) Sub Division First Zainakot had received 32.

585 metric tons of pipes and instead of adding the received supply to the balance stock, it has been subtracted from it.

The remaining balance has been shown 198.47 metric tons instead of 263.635 metric tons, and accordingly misappropriated, thereby causing a huge loss which has been worked out as Rs 34,39,141 to the state exchequer, the spokesman said.

He said further investigation was going on.
