While technological advancements have already started in Gujarat, state health minister, Jay Narayan Vyas, now promises that healthcare will reach interiors of rural areas and address health issues faced by rural folk.

Vyas was speaking at the Gujarat University convention centre on Saturday where there is a two-day 'Hospital Tech and Health & Hospital Conclave 2011' going on organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

In his keynote address, Vyas said, "Besides the three medical colleges started this year, we have planned three more colleges in the first phase at Gandhinagar, Patan and Valsad.

In the second phase, three more medical colleges will be set up at Junagadh, Vadnagar and Bharuch. Each of these colleges will have 150 seats." Vyas added, "Soon, there will be a new radiology machine installed at Civil Hospital. In addition we are bringing on road, 20 ICU-on-wheels with advanced technology and with almost all facilities as seen inside a hospital's ICU."

Vyas said that the growing population and huge number of middle class clients having good purchasing capacity is beneficial for the healthcare industry. Importantly, India is spending about 5.5% of GDP on healthcare and this will rise in days to come, which will also help the industry. While the size of the industry is expected to touch $75-80 billion in next five years, in the long-term it is likely to touch $125 billion."
