The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is bagging accolades for the city. After the success of a similar model in Curitiba in Brazil and Bogota in Colombia, it is the Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited's (AJL) BRTS that is grabbing the attention of foreign delegates from America.

An 18-member delegation from the American Planning Association (APA) was in the city on Monday, to study the BRTS. The delegation, which is touring India to see urban planning and visited Chandigarh, Udaipur, Jaipur and Jodhpur before coming to the city, also visited other project sites such as the Sabarmati Riverfront Development.

On Monday morning, the delegates took a ride in the BRTS and enjoyed its swanky and swift service.

"It felt really nice to see Ahmedabad's BRT. They have adopted the Bogota model and have also studied Curitiba's BRTS, but the way the service and design have been modified to suit Indian road condition is very impressive," said Alex Hinds, a delegate member and interim director of Centre for Sustainable Communities, Environmental
Studies and Planning.

This apart, the delegates enjoyed the heritage walk in the city and visited the Sabarmati Riverfront Development project site. But it was the BRTS that attracted most of their attention. Not only the service, it is also the way the BRTS is mapped on google earth that gave them the inspiration to track the modern bus service at a time when California is on the verge of getting the BRTS.

Executive director of the AJL Utpal Padia said that the delegates found the bus service smooth and swif. "They agreed that the BRT ride was swifter and were amazed with the fact that even amid traffic the BRTS maintains good speed," said Padia.
