Surinder Singh and his companions had allegedly beaten and manhandled a worker of NDMC Mukesh who was part of a team that was conducting a routine check of encroachment in Tughlaq Road area on August 4.

Aam Aadmi Party on Friday launched a vitriolic attack on Delhi police, saying they were planning to book AAP MLA Surinder Singh, who has been charged with assaulting an NDMC worker, under stringent sections at the behest of a former MLA. The party also claimed that police was reluctant to file an FIR against the NDMC officials, who were found extorting money from a vendor, in whose support Singh had come.

"Senior Delhi Police officials have instructed the police, at the behest of a former MLA, to book Singh under stringent sections," party leader Ashutosh said, without naming anyone.

"Even the vendor was beaten and money was being extorted from him. The police has registered an FIR at the behest of the NDMC official, but the poor vendor has been waiting for three days for getting an FIR registered," he said. Singh and his companions had allegedly beaten and manhandled a worker of NDMC Mukesh who was part of a team that was conducting a routine check of encroachment in Tughlaq Road area on August 4.

Sanitary Inspector R J Meena said the NDMC team was acting against a vendor for encroachment when the MLA arrived and started arguing in favour of him and later beat up Mukesh along with his men.

A case was registered against Singh and two other persons under various sections of the IPC and SC/ST Act, on Meena's complaint. An ACP level officer is supervising the probe into the incident. Police has summoned Singh twice for interrogation, but he has failed to turn up.

"While a case has been filed against ST/SC Act, the police fails to realise that vendor too is from the same community," senior party leader Sanjay Singh said.
